Deakin University’s Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus is unique and inspiring.
It lies within a rural setting near Geelong in Victoria, Australia, with renowned surf beaches and the famous Twelve Apostles at its doorstep.
Six Degrees Architects were commissioned to design an upgrade and rebuild of the central campus precinct.
It was their third project for the University.
The precinct is prominent, high-traffic, and of key strategic value.
It sits at the heart of the site, setting the stage for life on campus.
The brief called for the creation of a social hub for staff and students within the precinct with hospitality outlets and breakout spaces to be incorporated.
The Six Degrees Architects’ design aimed to de-institutionalize the space.
They leveraged their experience in hospitality design to create a vibrant, social place, affording students abundant opportunities to engage with and occupy the space.
It encourages them to remain on campus and facilitates a collegiate atmosphere too.
The facilities were designed to make use of the surrounding landscape, with new access routes created through the landscape and buildings to allow equal access for everyone.
