Hyde Park Residence

Hyde Park Residence, located in Adelaide, Australia, is a restored villa, complimented by an architectural extension with interior detailing that gently embraces the character of the home.

Designed by the Adelaide-based interior architecture and design firm started by Georgie Shepherd in 2011, the transition between the original house and the modern extension was carefully orchestrated with materials, details, and textures that maintained the integrity and context of the home.

As you enter the building from street level you are graced with a restored historical cottage. As you transition through the space, the link from old to new is delicately blurred, pushing towards modern open-plan living.

Whilst the space is large, there is a sense of intimacy, depth, and homeliness through the careful and considered choice of materials.

The GHiD scheme deconstructs, reconstructs, and preserves the historic nature of the building, and then adds another luxe layer of history and personality.

The Georgie Shepherd Interior Design team had worked with the client on previous hospitality projects.

The relationship was strong.

The clients’ preferred design aesthetic, established throughout their hospitality venues, was translated into their home.

The two main design objectives for this project were to create:

  • a smooth transition from the old to the new
  • a functional yet dynamic floorplan within the confines of the existing footprint

Internal light wells and courtyards were introduced to separate the buildings and bring light into the inner areas of the home.

And the subtle transition between the two builds was treated through materiality and spatial planning.

The kitchen and living area colour palette was intentionally limited.

That allowed the space to breathe and to focus on strong forms, lines, and detailing that reinforced the strong architectural style of the extension.

Materiality is natural and luxe.

The monolithic marble island speaks for itself in front of the seamless black kitchen joinery. The hidden pantry and laundry are in-keeping with the material palette, yet lend hints of the client’s feminine personality with a nod to the elegant detailing of the original house.

The Georgie Shepherd Interior Design team believes that a home should not just be an expression of the designers’ style, but a representation of the personalities that live and occupy it.

This home embodies this young family of four.

It’s a functional and robust space that suits their busy lifestyle.

This project is successful because if melds the history and heritage of the original architecture with the modern extension.

The addition is a seamless transition of the home’s classic style into a contemporary aesthetic, translated through romantic details, textures, and classic materials.

Materials selected by the Georgie Shepherd Interior Design team suit the family’s day-to-day life rather than being a mere design whimsy.

They are textural and soft in palette, but above all, highly durable and built for longevity.

All-natural materials were used throughout – marble, timber, and wool.

They will age gracefully and add another layer of history and detail to a historical building for years to come.
