Designed by architects Klaus Carson Studio, Screen House is a modest and small project located in a heritage conservation area, nestled in a row of heritage-listed Victorian-era terraces.
The original Victorian terrace was burnt down and replaced in the 1970s.
This presented the Klaus Carson Studio team with a unique opportunity to address the frontage of a terrace in an extremely conservative heritage conservation area within the City.
Their initial client brief was simply a first-floor level balcony addition with privacy screening.
It’s not often an architect has the opportunity to address the front facade of a terrace or house in a heritage conservation area with a modern approach.
The design team thought beyond the brief, presenting the idea of adding a new first-floor level open living room with a boundary to boundary metal batten screen that opened in various ways, tempering the level of privacy, light, and views out to the city.
The clients embraced their vision so the scope was expanded to include a new suspended concrete slab that spanned boundary to boundary.
That created a new living room which was then screened with the batten facade.
A cut back in the new slab allowed northern light to continue to penetrate through to the dining area.
Key Products Used
Sculptform anodized metal battens and automated gate arms.
