Sydney International Airport

Sydney International Airport

The retail space at Sydney Airport Terminal 1 is a sophisticated interpretation of a ‘marketplace’ – offering comfortable places to sit and improved food and beverage options for transiting passengers.

Built over an existing 1960’s building, the Marketplace uses height and natural light to establish a clear wayfinding solution through the terminal.

An expanse of glass along the south eastern wall provides passengers with an unprecedented view of the airfield and Botany Bay.

The overall design principle is one of lightness in structure, capturing the essence of flight

The Cox Architecture design of the Sydney Airport “Marketplace” utilises the best in exposed structural steel technology to provide an innovative signature space within the evolving international terminal precinct.

Limited by curfew hour constraints and minimal airside available footprint, the lightweight steel structure allowed for substantial offsite construction and minimal onsite assemblage to ensure uninterrupted passenger flow under the assemblage throughout the construction period.

The result is an efficient structure that speaks to an Australian attitude towards admission of natural light and lightness in structure.

Cox Architecture’s approach to sustainable design covers aspects of exterior and interior conditions.

Externally the content is highly marine-exposed and all materials and finishes were selected to achieve a 50 year design life.

Internally the base architecture materials were selected subject to the high passenger use and subsequent safety and maintenance regimes.
