The Boatyard

The Boatyard

Designed by BVN and completed in 2017, The Boatyard is a boutique four storey multi-residential project on the riverfront in Bulimba, Brisbane.

Four individual buildings are set within a garden setting that connects the street to the river to create both private and shared indoor and outdoor rooms at varying scales.

The planning arrangement produces private spaces with river views for all apartments.

Building form is a combination of transparent and operable elevations to the street and river combined with refined gables that deliver privacy and solar control to the east and west.

The composite timber and solid, horizontally proportioned and curved spandrels and parapets are conceived to associate with the timber boat building history of the site, along with ‘ocean liner’ comfort.

Deeply set windows within the gables combine with interior cabinetry to form deep reveals and a sense of ‘mass’ that compares with the glazed elevations.
Timber screens are angled to the view and create privacy where required.

Operable panels within the window systems allow for natural ventilation.

The 27 dwellings are generously scaled with refined finishes as a marketable alternative to Brisbane’s typical single house stock.

They range between two bedroom apartments and large, family sized four bedroom homes.

All apartments are ‘open’ to the north and south, and therefore look both inward – to the lushly planted garden– and outward to the river and street.
